The Visibility Problem – Why Your Personal Brand Isn’t Growing Online

July 22, 2026

< back to podcast home

It’s time to address a common misconception about digitally marketing your business that I’ve often encountered among marketing clients, friends with small businesses, and even owners of large companies. They’ll show me their fully stocked social media feed and ask, “If I’m posting consistently, why isn’t my brand getting seen online?”

While having a consistent posting schedule on your social platforms is a good habit, it’s not the end-all, be-all of your online marketing strategy. It’s just one tool in a web of branding and content strategies you need to employ so that your posts, network, and business grow in the ever-evolving digital landscape. Let’s break down the key components for enhancing your brand visibility strategy and increasing your business’s online reach.

Positioning Your Online Presence for Clarity & Authority: Your Profile

Most smart professionals don’t struggle with showing up, they struggle with positioning. Just being present online isn’t the same thing as presenting yourself as an authority in your field. When someone looks at your LinkedIn profile or social media presence (both your brand’s and your own as a leader in your business), or your brand’s website, would they immediately understand:

  • Who you help,
  • What you’re known for, or
  • Why does your perspective matter?

Or would they have to figure it out by themselves? If you don’t see those answers clearly on the screen, then your audience won’t get the first impression of your business that you intended. Here are some actions and items you can use to elevate your profile, help differentiate your brand, and signal authority to visitors:

  • Your headline communicates value, not just a job title.
  • Your profile photo aligns with your professional authority.
  • Your profile clearly communicates who your ideal customers are and what outcomes you help them achieve.
  • You include credentials, recognition, or leadership roles to exemplify your well-earned authority.
  • You include testimonials, case studies, or social proof to showcase the positive impact your brand has had on clients.

Positioning Your Online Presence for Clarity & Authority: Your Content

Your social media profiles and business website are for more than listing information about your experience and promotions. These are also an effective home for high-value content that shows your audience that 1) you know your stuff, and 2) if your expertise is this good in small free snippets, then your full business is worth exploring more as a customer. Like with your profile, however, you must be strategic in how you create and distribute your brand’s content.

Your online content should check the following crucial boxes before you ever click “Post”:

  • The voice is consistent with your branding across channels.
  • The look and feel are consistent with your branding across channels.
  • Your underlying messaging and mission are consistent across channels.
  • It demonstrates original thinking and a high level of organization.
  • It educates your audience in some way, with a clear call-to-action on what to do now with this knowledge.

Through your content, your audience should be able to accurately and consistently describe what your brand cares about, what advantage you want them to have by interacting with your content/business, and what type of engagement you want from them. This will help establish trust in your business, belief in your authority, and entice potential customers.

Increasing Your Brand’s Online Reach: Visibility & Discoverability

Now that your online foundation is in position, it’s time to focus on how you can actually get people to see it. You already have a consistent social media posting schedule down, and that’s a good place to start. Social media algorithms tend to reward consistent posting, but that’s not all. In 2026, here are the top three priorities of each major social media platform’s algorithm:

  • LinkedIn: time spent on your post, comment rate, consistent topics
  • TikTok: consistent topics, watch time/completion rate, SEO
  • YouTube: watch time/completion rate, SEO, consistent posting
  • Facebook: original content, consistent topics, Reels
  • Instagram: engagement rate (especially DM sharing), SEO, consistent posting

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) will be one of the biggest factors in your discoverability strategy. Use tools like SEMrush and Google Ads Keyword Planner to help you build a list of relevant keywords for your website, social media profiles, and content. Also, having tools like Google Analytics and Google Search Console (formerly known as Google Webmaster Tools) connected lets you review the Search Terms people type into Google that lead to your website being found; the latter will even include hidden keywords that Google Analytics won’t show you. Also, do research using AI tools such as Gemini, Claude or ChatGPT to see if your website appears in any results at all. If not, you need to beef up your strategy to increase visibility on these popular AI tools.

Plus, to make sure that your content best fills the screens of users searching those keywords, it is best practice to keep your topics aligned within your niche. Your posts should feel intentional, accurately represent what you want to be known for, and advance your goals. They should not seem random nor drift from your mission. By consistently showing up the right way, your brand will become more visible to the right audiences.

Increasing Your Brand’s Online Reach: Conversions & Growth

Once you have all your creative elements and functional settings adjusted for success, it’s time to get people to actually engage with your brand—and in the ways you want them to. By attracting ideal customers through intentional content that builds authority and trust beyond promotional content, you can take audiences from casual viewers to engaged followers with clear, compelling calls to action.

So, you’ll need to have your website or primary link prominently displayed on your profile or webpage, and mention in your content copy where to find it and how going there will benefit the user.

Depending on your brand and/or current campaign goals, that could mean directing them to subscribe to your email newsletter, follow your social media account, download a resource from your website, book a service, or purchase a product. Whatever your intended conversion action is, it needs to be clear, accessible, and reinforced throughout your online presence.

Whether you are a budding entrepreneur or an established business leader in your industry, make sure your expectations align with the reality of digital marketing. Success in growing your brand online isn’t measured by going viral or becoming an influencer—it’s about aligning your online presence with your real-life credibility and significantly increasing your reach to the right audience. Growth is a process, not an overnight result. Come back to the tips discussed throughout this article on a regular basis so that your branding and content strategies remain up to date with the changing social media sphere, as well as developments in your business.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions About Online Business Growth & Brand Visibility

How can I tell if my online growth and visibility strategies are working?

Pay attention to your analytics data. The best way to know how to make smart, data-driven digital marketing decisions is to assess what’s performing well with your audience. Every social media platform and website host will have a hub of metrics (may be called “Insights,” “Analytics,” or “Metrics”) showing you how many users laid eyes on your digital asset (post, profile, webpage, etc.), how they got to it, how much time they spent on it, and what engagement was taken on it. Extra tools, such as Google Analytics, or more detailed insights only available to Business or Premium social media accounts, can give you even more data on audience behavior and conversion indicators.

What if I don’t like using social media?

I understand that feeling. Promoting yourself online can sometimes feel performative or overwhelming, especially with all the “rules” platforms put in place to “succeed.” Just remember that you define what success means, and posting on social media every day isn’t the only option in your digital marketing toolbelt. At a minimum, have a modern, accessible website that presents your business with authority and uses effective SEO strategies and CTAs. If being on (at least some) social media platforms is important to your brand’s online goals and growth, you can also hire an expert Social Media Team to take care of it for you.

What if I’m doing everything right and it’s still not working?

There might be a deeper reason why your brand’s digital marketing strategies are missing the mark with your ideal audience. To dive into the intentions, mechanisms, and results of your current social media marketing program, let’s schedule a VIP Power Day to build a custom plan for your brand.
